A stablecoin is a cryptocurrency designed to maintain a stable value, usually pegged to a fiat currency like the US dollar, to a commodity, or through algorithms.

Stablecoins solve the most cited problem in crypto: volatility. A stablecoin combines the stability of a traditional currency with the properties of digital money on a blockchain, so you can send it anywhere in the world in minutes, hold it without a bank, and use it in DeFi applications, all without its value swinging with the market’s mood. By transaction volume, they are the most used crypto product on the planet.

The three types of stablecoins

Fiat-backed stablecoins, like USDT and USDC, hold reserves in dollars and liquid instruments for every token issued, and dominate the market by far. Crypto-backed stablecoins, like DAI, are issued against collateral in other cryptocurrencies deposited in smart contracts, with overcollateralization to absorb volatility. And algorithmic stablecoins tried to hold their price with automatic minting and burning mechanisms, a design that the 2022 Terra/LUNA collapse discredited quite definitively, wiping out 40 billion dollars in a week.

What a stablecoin is for in practice

Real-world uses go far beyond trading. They serve to dollarize savings in countries with high inflation, send remittances for a fraction of the traditional cost, get paid for international services without banking delays, and park capital between trades without leaving the ecosystem. In Latin America, where access to the dollar is often restricted or expensive, that utility explains why the region leads global stablecoin adoption year after year.
